creative space = creative energy

I am SO happy to have a new space to call all my own.  Recently my boyfriend and I moved to a place with enough room for us each to have a studio, and it’s been heaven.  I have room to organize all my stuff, spread out, close a door, and take deep breaths.  I even did a little stretchy yoga today when I needed a break.  This is a huge departure from our last place, where my ‘spot’ was in the living room.  My desk and drawing table fit, but there was very little elbow room, and zero privacy.  Sometimes you need to get a little space to yourself, you know?  I heard a great TED talk on introverts by Susan Cain today, which  I related to completely.

Needing some room to yourself seems to be especially relevant if you are waiting for creativity to strike.  I’ve found that with the combination of the excitement of a new environment, and more and private space, I’ve had a new surge of creative energy.  To follow up on my last post on dreams, I’ve been reading Jung’s autobiography, “Memories, Dreams, Reflections,” which has been inspiring.  While I haven’t actually gotten too much out of it in relation to dreams specifically, I do like a lot of his general ideas.  His trust in the unconscious images that come to us is pretty freeing.  In terms of looking for inspiration it’s just what I need to hear.  I can be guilty of trying to ‘push’ a good idea into being, or look at ideas too much from the perspective of other people, but Jung confirms that it’s ok to trust the value of imagery and symbols that come to you naturally.

I tried to apply this when it was time for my latest project- poster making.  After many years together, I am finally making a show poster for my boyfriend’s band.  I’m going to show just the main image I came up with, but will follow up with the finished product when it’s finished.  I’m taking the hand drawing route all the way, as I really like the feel of hand drawn letters.  Working on that part now.Image

happy birthday Tom!

A friend of mine is having a birthday show at Little Mountain Gallery, and I had lots of fun making a poster for the event.  I even got to use my stamps.  It’s going to be so much fun, and it’s a fundraiser too!

fiction project- full version

It took an embarrassingly long time to figure out, but I finally got the images from my ‘fiction project’ off of the Brooklyn Art House Co-Op site to put into a gallery here.

get well cards and gm free coffee shops

So coming soon  ‘Mobius,’ a new coffee shop, will be opening its doors at 25th and Main.  If you’re walking by before then, however, you might be able to duck in for a sneak peek.  The cool thing about Mobius is that they’re doing everything free of genetically modified products, from their baked goods, soups, coffee and sugars, right down to their coffee cups and lids (which apparently can traditionally contain genetically modified corn.  I did not know that).  I’m  the lucky girl who will display her art on Mobius’ walls.  Last time I was there they had a cozy set up with a brick fire place, some antique-y  furniture, comfy chairs, and some serious wall space for art, which works out well for me.

Also, I’ve included a picture of a get well card for someone who is going for ankle surgery.  Partially inspired by upcoming Valentine’s Day.

Winter time painting

So here are some recent paintings- some for Christmas presents, others resulting from my newfound fox fascination.  Not quite sure why foxes seem to be the first things that show up on a page- must be something to do with that awesome orange.  A new-ish colour for me.  Usually I just stick to blue.

Eastside Culture Crawl and Anonymous show, oh my

The past weekend until now has been busting full of artistic inspiration, partially provided by my cute, artsy parents.  I just got back from seeing some of their artwork in the  ‘anonymous show’ in North Van.  This show is a cool idea for a fundraiser (for the North Vancouver Arts Council maybe?) where people submit canvases that are all the same size (8 in x 8 in I think, some small size) and the selected works are all displayed anonymously and sold for $100, with half of the money going to the Arts Council.   Spoiler alert: I am going to show which pieces were made by my parents, because I’m proud of them and actually like the pieces.  I also took some photos of some other favourites.

Eastside Culture Crawl- hopefully anyone in Vancouver knows what this is.  Artists in Vancouver’s eastside, mostly East of Clark Drive, North of 1st, open their studios to the public and allow everyone to wander around and ogle their work.  It’s awesome.

Recent ness

So, not too much new stuff has been up in my world, but it feels good to be finished a big project, which has a title now- “Violet and her Worries.”  I am trying to figure out the best way to get the story published. . . but in the mean time it’s freeing to not have to work within the guidelines of a project.

I am realizing that I really like water colours, especially with line drawings over top.  I am messing around with shapes and colours and lines, and it feels nice not to want things to look a certain way.  Although, things are feeling super wide open, in that I have no specific ideas about what I want to work on next.  I’m hoping it will become clear as I make messes.

Pikaland.com has offered lots of inspiration.  I’ve been admiring artwork that’s graphic with nice bold shapes and clean lines, like Alan Brown’s work:

LAST illustration! I think.

So I’ve started working on the very last illustration for my ‘worries’ project (title is temporary). The task of sending this out into the world is super daunting . . . So if anyone has any tips, advice, connections, etc. please give me a shout.
I have managed to write an accompanying story as well, which feels like a step in the right direction (although as I trawl the internet and find out more about the world of childrens publishing, maybe not so much?  I don’t know).  Am searching for ideas for the title, and the perfect name for the main character.  So far I like Violet and Zoe.
I’m back at work now, and so thankful I had time over the summer to be anti social and hunker down and get things done. I have a feeling the next few steps of this project will happen in slow motion. Oy.
